RAS WEEKENDER - AWAY IN WEIHAI

Friday the 23rd of July through Monday the 26th of July 2010

LONG IN PLANNING LONG AWAITED THE WEIHAI WEEKENDER IS FINALLY ON OFFER! 

Do as our predecessors did in the 1920’s and 30’s and escape the summer heat of Shanghai to the costal resorts of northern Shandong

Province. Weihai  (formerly Weihaiwei) and the neighboring city of Yantai (formerly Chefoo) were popular summer resorts for Shanghailanders, in days gone by, and many remnants of that history and earlier histories still survive, in this picturesque corner of China

ITINERARY

Friday July 23:

1110:  Depart Shanghai Hongqiao

International Airport

for 90-minute flight to Weihai.

1300: Arrival Weihai Airport

Bus transfer to the Shiyuanhaijing Hotel

We will stop en route at a typical local village with vernacular stone cottage architecture.

The remaining afternoon at leisure with time to relax on the beach, take a swim or a hike in the hills nearby.

1830: BBQ dinner on the terrace of the Golden Bay Hotel.

Overlooking the bay and a short walk away from our hotel.

Saturday July 24:

7.30 to 8.45 breakfast.

9.00 am depart:

Morning tour of historic Weihai; on this you journey we will pass through spectacular coastal scenery and stop off at various historic villas once owned by foreigners, including the summer home of E. S. Wilkinson, an RAS luminary in the 1930s.

This part of our visit will be hosted by a representative from the Weihai Archives Bureau.

The RAS has long links with the bureau, going back to November 2007 when its director, Zhang Jianguo, gave a talk for the Society.

12.30 Lunch in a local restaurant 

After lunch we will take a 20-minute ferry ride to Liugong Island to explore its history and visit the Museum of the Sino-Japanese War.

6.00pm Return to hotel

Evening at leisure -

no meal included, but plenty of options to get together along the seaside promenade with its array of seafood restaurants and outdoor seating.

Sunday July 25:

7.00 - 7.45am Breakfast

8.00 am departure for Yantai,

We will tour of what survives of its charismatic old town, Yantai Hill and the Yantai Museum.

12.30 lunch in the Changyu Winery restaurant

1.30 pm we will drive to visit the Treaty Port Vineyard near Penglai,

Owned by Shanghai-based Chris Ruffle; we will tour the estate, after which we will be invited for wine tasting. Dinner will be served in its very own Scottish castle!

Late return to Weihai.

Monday July 26:

7.00 - 9.00 Breakfast

Morning at leisure,

11.30 depart hotel for

13.35 flight to Shanghai

15.00: Arrival in Shanghai at Hongqiao International

2)   I agree to follow the rules and guidelines as set forth by the organizers with particular emphasis regarding personal safety and conduct.

3)   I agree to inform the organizers of any medications, diet restrictions or health problems I have. (Privacy will be assured)

4)   I agree to leave the group peacefully if I cannot meet the rules and guidelines as set out by the organizers and affiliates and those stated in this document.

Shiyuanhaijing Hotel in Weihai is a family run, comfortable three star hotel, right on the International Beach - one of the finest bathing beaches in northern China.

This is where we will be spending our three nights.
