A TOUR OF ABELARDO LAFUENTE BUILDINGS IN SHANGHAI
Through the eyes of
ALVARO LEONARDO
Previously, Alvaro Leonardo, a Spanish architect currently practising in Shanghai introduced the RAS members and friends to Abelardo Lafuente, who was the only Spanish architect to practise in Shanghai between the years 1913 and 1931. Lafuente designed and built a wide range of buildings in and around, the city. His most important works included cinemas and hotel projects. He also built churches, mosques, garages, luxurious villas, apartment buildings, office buildings and at least one public hospital.
Lafuente died in Shanghai, in December 1931, 80 years on Alvaro hopes to present an exhibition of Lafuente life’s work as a celebration of the architect’s life. In a specially arranged English language tour, Alvaro will lead us (by bus) through the remaining architecture of Lafuente.
Alvaro Leonardo is the co-founder of POLIFACTORY, an international and mulitidisciplinary platform for architecture, design, arts and knowledge exchange. He has worked on various design, construction and engineering projections in many countries as well as guest lecturing at E.T.S.A. (Seville, Spain) and U.F.M.G. (Belo Horizonte, Brazil as well as various Spanish architectural institutions. He has a Master’s degree in Architecture from E.T.S.A. Valencia (Spain) as well as one in Urbanism from R.T.W.H. Aachen (Germany).

FULL PROGRAMME FOR TOUR OF ABELARDO LAFUENTE BUILDINGS
The tour will take us along Nanjing Road where Lafuente’s association with the Jewish Community, of his time, will be explained. We will continue to the Bund, which will illustrate his relationship with the most important hotels of the day, in particular, the Shanghai Hotel Company. The former Hongkou district, our next stop, is where we will learn of his connection with the world of cinema in Shanghai and Lafuenta’s links with Antonio Ramos, the Spanish tycoon, who introduced the cinema in China. Returning to the former French Concession we will complete the tour with a visit to the Mansion House, a villa completed in 1921, for the Rosenfeld family by Abelardo Lafuente.
